Haralds Karlis emerged as one of the prime candidates to replace Rihards Kuksiks, who will have to miss EuroBasket 2015 due to health reasons. Very much like Kuksiks, the 24-year-old player is a terrific knock-down shooter with good athletic abilities and can play both wing positions. Having represented Latvia at U16 and U20 level, Karlis was never among the top players, but the late-blooming swingman looks to have found his niche as a ‘three-and-defence' type of player. Known for his strong work ethic and excellent attitude both on and off the court, Karlis played at Canarias Basketball Academy in Spain before moving to the NCAA, where he represented Seton Hall for four seasons. Having finished his collegiate career, the player will have the opportunity to impress national team coach Ainars Bagatskis and take in some valuable experience ahead of his first pro season with Valmiera back in Latvia.
