Nikita Shabalkin has never quite made the grade at the elite level having initially burst onto the scene in 2006/07 as a young and exciting forward who promised big things. He played only a handful of minutes at EuroBasket 2007 but nevertheless is still a bona-fide EuroBasket gold medal winner. After spending the last EuroBasket year not in Poland but winning a World Student Games silver medal, he could now be back in the mix again after an excellent season with Dynamo. He lit up EuroChallenge with double digit returns in seven out of eight games and also showed his shooting range. Indeed Shabalkin also reached a EuroCup Final with Khimki Moscow Region. He will play for Lokomotiv Kuban next season and offers Coach Blatt great versatility since he is a genuine inside-outside threat.
