Luol Deng quite rightly enjoys an unrivalled iconic status within British Basketball, not only because of his exploits in the NBA but also because of the commitment, pride and passion he has shown for the National Team programme ever since pulling on the Great Britain vest. His cruel reward for dragging the team to promotion and a historic place at EuroBasket 2009 was to miss the tournament in Poland due to injury in a crushing blow that was felt by his peers and the fans alike. After helping to lead the Chicago Bulls to the NBA Conference Finals earlier this year he is now poised for a date with destiny and to finally lead the National Team at a major tournament two years later than he originally hoped. Deng is not just the heartbeat of the team, he is the heart and soul of Great Britain both on and off the court. While it wasn't exactly needed, Deng provided a timely reminder last summer of exactly what he brings to the table in terms of his extensive skill-set. Inside, outside, running the floor or making big defensive plays, NBA star Deng is a player with real class who will be the one to light a fire under Great Britain and give them a shot at causing some upsets. |
