Bauermann Hails Progress Made By Germany

Young promise Niels Giffey was cut from the Germany squad for the EuroBasket, but Bauermann was very satisfied with his work

Germany coach Dick Bauermann has hailed the success of the team's training camp on Gran Canaria and believes his team are in the best shape they have been for several summers as they prepare for the EuroBasket.

The team have wrapped up their 10-day camp on the Mediterranean island, and are now heading home before the next stage of their build-up.

"The time here has passed quickly, and that is always a great sign," Bauermann said.

"All 16 players have done a great job, in all areas - physical fitness, athleticism, game tactics.

"I am also glad that we have not had any serious injuries. Only one player missed a training session, all the rest were able to perform smoothly."

Bauermann believes there is a particularly strong spirit in the camp this summer, boosted in part by the commitment of Dirk Nowitzki and Chris Kaman to play in Lithuania, as well as the experience of the group as a whole.

"You can tell that almost all the players have had summers with the national team before," he said.

"This year the feel is more like 2008 and not like the past two summers, and that is helped by the fact Dirk and Chris are coming back."

Bauermann announced that he is cutting Dominik Bahiense de Mello and Nils Giffey from his squad.

"Both players have shown that they deserved their call-ups and they have given 100%" he said.

"But other players were a bit stronger, so I had to make that decision."
