Janis Blums - EuroBasket 2013 Profile

Team 2012-13: Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius (Lithuania, LKL)
Career: Broceni Riga (Latvia-LBL, 1998-00); BK LMT Riga (Latvia-LBL, 2000-01); BK Skonto Riga (Latvia-LBL, 2001-02); Anwil Wloclawek (Poland-PBL, 2002-03); BK Skonto Riga (Latvia-LBL, 2003); Anwil Wloclawek (Poland- PLK, 2003-04); BK Ventspils (Latvia-LBL, 2004-06); Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius (Lithuania-LKL, 2006-07); Basket Napoli (Italy-Lega, 2007-08); Bizkaia Bilbao Basket (Spain-ACB, 2008-12); Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius (Lithuania-LKL, 2012-present)

In 2011 when Latvia lined up at EuroBasket with the youngest team in the competition, Janis Blums, at 29, became the team's leader, veteran and captain. It was a major statement in itself for the guard to play in Lithuania, given how many others from the generation he had grown up playing with either opted out, or simply were not selected. However, Blums took the newfound responsibility on his shoulders like the consummate professional, opening the tournament with 32 points against eventual finalists, France. He went on to average 16 points-a-night, but in the end, without one or two old heads assisting him on the court, Latvia faded at the end of games. Now, with a team around him he knows better, plus a one or two veterans back on board to assist in the playmaking, Blums will be able to focus more on his own game. Blums was missing last summer due to injury, but recently mentioned in an interview that, had he seen the recently released Latvian basketball film Dream Team 1935 prior to summer, he would have played through injury - a clear statement that his desire to pull on the Latvian singlet remains strong. Unquestionably the leader of his team, look for Blums to be the go-to man should Latvia find themselves in a tight situation at the death.
