Gianluca Basile

Career: Reggio Emilia (Italy-Legadue, 1995-97), Reggio Emilia (Italy-Lega, 1997-99), Fortitudo Bologna (Italy-Lega, 1999-2005), AXA FC Barcelona (Spain-ACB, 2005-07)

Three missed free throws against Lithuania with a chance to force overtime in the Eight-finals at the World Championships seemed like it might be Gianluca Basile’s last hurrah in an Italian uniform.  After a ten-year international career, Basile was ready to announce that he would retire. But coach Recalcati convinced him to sleep on it and so the announcement never came and the 32 year-old "Baso" will be part of the team one more time. The Barcelona star will have a duel role with the team, serving as mentor and back-up to Belinelli and to provide long-distance shooting off the bench.
