Braunschweig had a disastrous start to the game, falling behind by 14 points after just 10 minutes (14-29). Midway through the second period, Pepinster’s advantage increased to 17 points and it looked as though Braunschweig would suffer a third defeat at home in the FIBA Europe League.
But it was Firic who dragged his team back into contention.
He scored 6 points in the last 2 minutes of the first half and at the break, Pepinster’s lead had been reduced to a more manageable 11 points.
Firic exploded for 10 points in the third quarter, after which Pepinster led by just 1 point, 64-65.
Fittingly, it was Firic who gave Braunschweig their first lead of the game. His lay-up at the start of the fourth put his side up 69-68, and on the next play he hit a three to give Braunschweig some breathing space, 72-68.
The momentum was enough for the German side to hang onto the lead and win the game.
Firic’s 28 points came on 12/13 shooting.
