Georgia’s attempts to win promotion to EuroBasket Division A received a significant blow on Wednesday when Iceland beat them right before the death with a three-pointer in a 76-75 upset.
Trying to keep pace with Group C leaders Finland, who are unbeaten at 6-0, Georgia led 74-72 but allowed Jakob Sigurdarson to nail a three-pointer with just two seconds remaining.
Georgia saw off a determined Austrian side on Saturday night in Tbilisi to keep pace with red hot Finland in Group C.
The Georgians were led by Zaza Pachulia who totaled 25 points and five rebounds in the victory.
Georgia raced out to a 26-8 lead by the end of the first quarter and stormed to an 88-60 victory at Luxembourg to remain just one game behind Finland in EuroBasket Division B Group C.
Needing a success to keep pace with the Finns, who brushed aside Austria 87-63 in their game on Tuesday to improve to 5-0, the Georgians got 16 points apiece from Zaza Pachulia and Manuchar Markoishvili.
Georgia split their final two warm-up games against Great Britain in Pau and can now look forward to their Eurobasket Division B qualifying campaign.
And according to their captain Vakhtang Natsvlishvili, that's the whole campaign, not just the expected Group C decider at home to Finland.
