13.09.2006

Jiri Welsch scored 23 points as the Czech Republic defeated Hungary 83-64.

With the victory, the Czech Republic is tied with Russia for the top spot in Group C. The two countries match-up next week with first place and an automatic berth to EuroBasket 2007 at stake.

Welsch scored nine of the 23 during a pivotal second quarter, in which the Czechs outscored Hungary 24-14 to take a 45-30 lead at the half.

Hungary would stick around in the second half, but would never seriously threaten.

The closest they would get is eight and the Czechs secured the win by scoring nine unanswered to close the game.

Welsch provided the exclamation point by drilling a three-pointer just before the final buzzer sounded.
