Following the meeting of the FIBA Europe Board in November 2002, it was decided that a new system of qualification would be implemented for the 2005 European Championship for Men.

Greece won over Israel in a game that featured few highlights. Greek forward Antonios Fotsis, formerly of the Memphis Grizzlies, had his best game of the tournament with 19 points, 10 rebounds and 3 steals.
Italy won another thriller and caused a second upset as they moved on to face Spain in the semifinals. After beating Germany on Monday, Italy this time surprised favourite Greece with a 62-59 win. The game was a low-scoring, defensive minded battle.
