| 08.12.2010 EUROLEAGUE WOMEN Galatasaray put in their most impressive display of the season to win at home against Sparta&K M.R. Vidnoje. In dire need of a victory to spark their season into life, Gala won 85-83 in overtime and are now 3-4 in Group C. Sparta&K (4-3) blew a chance to leapfrog Halcon Avenida into first place. VICI Aistes, who upset Sparta&K in Week 2, surprised Avenida in Kaunas on Wednesday night to leave the Spanish side 5-2. Galatasaray haven't been consistent this season but when Sylvia Fowles and Seimone Augustus are on their games, they'll have a chance to beat any opponent and such was the case against Sparta&K. Fowles had 20 points and 12 rebounds while August finished with 18 points and six boards. Another player that made a huge difference for Galatasaray was Donneka Hodges. The 28-year-old shooting guard went into the contest averaging 6.6 points per game but scored 20 against Sparta&K. With 1:43 to go in regulation, Jelena Milovanovic hit a jump shot to give Sparta&K a 77-75 lead. However, Galatasaray went to the other end and pulled even on a jumper from Melisa Can. Both sides spurned opportunities to go in front and the clash went to overtime. Irina Osipova gave Sparta&K an 80-79 advantage with 2:05 to go in the extra period only for Bahar Caglar to draw a foul and earn a trip to the line where she sank both to put Gala back in front. With 1:15 to go, Fowles made the first of two free-throws for an 82-80 lead but missed the second. Sparta&K failed to box out Augustus, who grabbed the offensive rebound but then missed a jump shot. Noelle Quinn was off target for Sparta&K and Fowles, who played for the Vidnoje team the previous two years, buried a jump shot for a four-point lead. Lauren Jackson gave Sparta&K a late lifeline with an impossible three-ball, taking her points haul to a game-high 23. After a Galatasaray timeout, Hodges sank one of two free-throws and then Caglar came up with a steal to preserve the victory. |
