27.07.2009

Italy's U16 warmed up for the European Championship in Lithuania in style by winning the Ancona Tournament, downing Spain 81-77 in overtime in the final.

A close game was sent to overtime when Spain missed a late three-pointer but were handed the chance to tie it from the free-throw line - an opportunity Jaime Fernandez did not pass up.

But Italy were able to capitalise on Spanish errors in the extra period, building their biggest lead of the game at five points.

Diego Monaldi led Italy with 18 points, while Francesco Vecchia had 11.

Fernandez finished with 15 points for Spain, who finished second in the tournament.

Greece finished third in the tournament with Slovenia fourth.
