A couple of Austria Under-20 players are in the reckoning for senior team roster spots this summer after being included in the 16-man preliminary squad by coach Neno Asceric.
Moritz Lanegger and Rashid Mahalbasic will represent the country at the U20 European Championship Division B in Oberwart and Güssing from July 14 to 24 before joining the senior team.
Mahalbasic looks to have a big future.
The 2.09m power forward/center recently took part in the annual adidas Euro Camp in Treviso, Italy.
He felt he'd made a good impression, particularly on defense, for those watching like Indiana Pacers supremo Larry Bird.
"It was really great," Mahalbasic said.
"I think I have brought out the best possible."
Austria will play in EuroBasket Division B against Estonia, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.
Austria preliminary squad: Richard Poiger, Thomas Schreiner, Martin Speiser (all UBC St. Pölten), Heinz Kügerl, Moritz Lanegger (both Kapfenberg Bulls), Kevin Payton, Stjepan Stazic (both Basket Clubs Vienna), Benedikt Danek (Arkadia Traiskirchen Lions), Jason Detrick (Lagun Aro San Sebastian GBC / ESP), Davor Lamesic (WBC Raiffeisen catfish), Rashid Mahalbasic (Wörthersee Pirates), Matthias Mayer (Allianz Swans Gmunden), Christoph Nagler (Xion Dukes Klosterneuburg), Alexander Nunner (BSC Raiffeisen Fürstenfeld Panthers), Hannes Ochsenhofer (Oberwart Gunners), Hermann Opoku (George Washington University / USA-NCAA) - On standby: Lorenzo O'Neal, Matthew Rachar.
