Roundup: Hosts Draw First Blood In Austria

The action in Division B of the U20 European Championship Men 2010 tipped off in Austria and it was home favourite Rasid Mahalbasic who stole the headlines with a stunning 27 points and 12 rebounds as the hosts got off to a winning start 88-79 against Belgium.

Moritz Lanegger weighed in with 13 points and dished out 6 assists

The hosts slumped to a 0-13 start in a nervous first quarter but tied the game after 16 minutes only to open a nine point half-time lead and then never looked back.

Also in Group E, forward Ovie Soko announced his arrival in the tournament by posting 24 points for Great Britain who overcame Denmark 79-65. Fellow forward William Neighbour weighed in with 21 points.

In a game that went back in forth in the first half Great Britain broke the game wide open after the break to lead by as many as 17 points and cruised the rest of the way.

The action in Group A saw a tight game between Israel and Sweden with the latter eventually coming out on top thanks mainly to 20 points by Christopher Ryan and holding the Israel team to just 9 third quarter points.

Sweden overcame a woeful night from the free throw line (8/21) which allowed Israel to claw their way back into the game but avoided a late upset.

Meanwhile Tornike Shengelia was the stand-out for Georgia with 22 points and 10 rebounds but couldn't prevent his team from sinking to an 83-67 defeat to Hungary.

In Group B there were wins for Bulgaria as Aleksandar Georgiev posting a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds in the game with Portugal while Roopi Ahonen top scored with 18 points as Finland hammered Switzerland 92-64.

The biggest blowout of the day came for Norway who obliterated Belarus 80-35 in Group E as Roy Nwachukwu pulled down 13 rebounds to go with his 9 points. Finally, a blistering 28-8 first quarter by Slovak Republic helped them to a 76-62 success against Romania.
