Spain Topple Georgia, Earn Medal Round Spot

Xavier Rey's double-double led Spain to a comfortable 96-68 victory over Georgia on Wednesday to earn the Iberians a place atop Group F of the U20 European Championship Men and a semi-finals spot.

Rey collected 21 points and 11 rebounds - his second double-double in three days - while Sergio Llull and Javier Beirán each scored 15 points and Albert Teruel chipped in 12 points.

David Ustiashvili's Georgia side started strong, pulling ahead 10-4 early and leading 24-21 after one period.

They still led 36-35 with three minutes to play in the second quarter before Spain jumped out ahead 46-38 at halftime.

Juan Antonio Orenga's team then used a 10-1 run over the first six minutes of the second half for a 56-39 lead on their way to a 67-45 advantage after three quarters.

Georgia, who committed 20 turnovers, would get no closer the rest of the way with Spain even increasing the lead to 31 points late in the fourth.

Giorgi Shermadini led Georgia with 12 points and Giorgi Gaprindashvili had 10 points in a losing cause.

Spain take on Italy in a top-notch showdown on Wednesday while Georgia, who dropped to 1-3 in the group will face Croatia.
