Taranto Edge Out Irun
Rebekkah Brunson gathered 26 points and 16 rebounds to carry Cras Basket to a 62-59 home victory over Hondarribia-Irun in the EuroCup Women showdown of Group J favourites.
The 2005 WNBA champion and 2007 EuroCup winner Brunson scored 14 of the Italians' final 18 points, including the last eight in the win. Germany national team power forward Linda Fröhlich helped out with 10 points, five rebounds and four assists.
The Spaniards were led by Latvia forward Liene Jansone's 16 points and nine rebounds. Shameka Christon scored 18 points and Ashley Robinson chipped in with 11 rebounds for Hondarribia-Irun, who reached the eighth-finals last season.
Serbia national team guard Monika Veselovski, who scored 10 points, missed a three-pointer with two seconds left which would have evened the game.
In the other Group J match, Laina Badiane and Martina Luptakova combined for 35 points as Challes-Les-Eaux Basket grabbed a 75-70 victory at English league finalists Rhonda Rebels.
Jessica Davenport added 16 rebounds and Slavka Frniakova collected 11 points and seven assists for Challes-Les-Eaux, who were in the third division just four years ago.
A tough Group H saw two surprising games.
The 2003 EuroCup champions and 2006 finalists Pays Aix Basket knocked off 08 Stockholm HR 58-53 despite playing a poor game on the road.
Nathalie Lesdema scored 12 points for the French side, including two baskets in the final 1:26 as the young Swedish champions committed two of their 24 turnovers in the final minute.
Pays Aix survived a nightmare shooting performance of 33% from the field and 57% from the foul stripe.
Meanwhile, Italian side Lavezzini Basket - 2007 EuroCup semi-finalists - were surprised 69-58 at home against Gran Canaria as Roneeka Hodges scored 26 points and Finland's Reetta Piipari added 20.
In Group G, three-time Polish semi-finalists CCC Polkowice easily overcame Seat Foton Gyor of Hungary 71-54. Czech guard Veronika Bortelova led the way with 19 points and Petra Stampalija had 15 points and 12 rebounds.
And Natalya Vedlya poured in 16 points while Varvara Psareva added nine points and 18 rebounds in Russian side Dynamo Kursk's 66-55 victory at home against Czech league semi-finalists Kara Trutnov.
