Last 16 Week 3 Review

26 January 2012

6. Kirk Penney (Fuenlabrada)
Besiktas managed to contain Fuenlabrada top scorer Kirk Penney but that was about the only thing that went well for the Turkish club on Tuesday

All good things must come to an end, and so it proved for the unbeaten run of Besiktas in the EuroChallenge.

The Turkish outfit, which has provided its fans with a lot of thrills in the competition this season, trailed for most of the game at Fuenlabrada on Tuesday but stormed back with the hot-shooting of Zoran Erceg and Adam Morrison to take the lead, only to fall at the death, 72-70.

Mike Hall, who recently joined Fuenlabrada, hit a long, game-winning jumper with 20 seconds to go while being guarded by his former American college roommate at George Washington, Besiktas big man Pops Mensah-Bonsu.

Carlos Arroyo and not Erceg or Morrison took the final shot for Besiktas and missed everything.

Fuenlabrada improved to 3-0 in the EuroChallenge Last 16 while Besiktas fell to 2-1.

Besiktas coach Ergin Ataman was in a feisty mood after the game.

"It is the first loss we've had in this competition," he said to Spanish journalists.

"See you in Istanbul.

"We are going to recover the two points that we lost today and we will end as group leaders."

The good news for Fuenlabrada, other than the victory, was the return of Leo Mainoldi.

The Argentinian Olympic hopeful missed some action with a knee problem but came off the bench on Tuesday and hit a couple of big three-pointers.

He finished with eight points in 16 minutes.

Hall, however, was the game-winner with 15 points and seven rebounds.

BK Pardubice, meanwhile, breathed some life into their Last 16 campaign with an 87-80 triumph over BC Nizhny Novgorod on Wednesday.

They are 1-2 and BC NN are 0-3.

For Pardubice, Corey Muirhead was terrific.

He made 13 of his 16 free-throws and finished with 20 points while Maurice Hampton sank seven of eight free-throws and had 19 points.

BK Ventspils did the best thing possible after their implosion at home against ZZ Leiden in week two of the Last 16.

Gundars Vetra's side hit the road and stunned Roanne Basket in France, 89-88, in overtime.

Mamadi Diane had 25 points while Latvia international Martins Meiers hit a pair of game-clinching free-throws at the end.

24. Mamadi Diane (BK Ventspils)
Recent BK Ventspils signing Mamadi Diane had 25 points in the Latvian side's thrilling overtime win at Roanne

Diane was playing in his third game with Ventspils after appearing in four with Slovakians Bemaco SPU Nitra in the Regular Season.

If there is one thing the Ivory Coast international Diane can do, it's put the ball in the basket.

He had 32 points earlier this season while playing for Nitra against Norrköping Dolphins.

Roanne and EWE Baskets are now top of Group I with 2-1 records.

EWE Baskets throttled ZZ Leiden 85-62 in their game.

Ventspils and Leiden are each 1-2.

No player is shooting the ball as well as Ilian Evtimov of Elan Chalon.

In his team's 87-72 Group J victory over Okapi Aalstar, Evtimov drilled four of six shots from the arc and finished with 18 points.

All four of his three-pointers came in the fourth quarter, including one that put the French team in front to stay at 61-59.

Evtimov has now made 32 of 62 (51.6%) shots from long range in the competition this season.

He has buried 11 of his last 13 attempts, including his perfect seven of seven night at Telekom Baskets that did not net his team a win.

Chalon and Telekom Baskets Bonn, who won at home over Szolnoki Olaj, 89-75, are 2-1.

Szolnoki and Okapi are each 1-2.

In Group L, Antwerp Giants overcome their 0-2 start to post an 83-58 victory over Triumph Lyubertsy.

Ralph Biggs and Michael Roll scored 13 points apiece in the victory for the Giants.

Triumph are now 0-3 in the Last 16 like fellow Russians BC NN.

In one of the most thrilling games of the night, Pinar Karsiyaka were at home where they have been so tough to play the past couple of seasons but Artland Dragons proved up to the task.

The German club won 99-95 and David Holston had a very sweet game against his former employers, scoring 31 points in a duel with MVP of the week Jovo Stanojevic, who had 32.

Holston, one of Karsiyaka's leading players last season, also handed out eight assists for Artland.

The Dragons and Karsiyaka are 2-1 at the top of the pool followed by Antwerp and BC NN.
