Turkey Top Greece But Only Just

23 July 2009

Enes Kanter had a monster game with 22 points and 22 rebounds to lead Turkey past Greece 78-74 on the opening day of the U18 European Championship Men 2009, in Metz, France.

Greece got off to a quick start, taking a 22-15 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Turks fought their way back behind Can Mutaf and Kanter to go into the break on top, 40-37.

The teams traded the lead throughout the third quarter and the early part of the final period with neither side able to pull away completely.

Yannis Karathanasis hit a three-pointer to help Greece into a 65-60 lead with just over five minutes left in the game, but Turkey - led by the pair of Kanter and Mutaf - then ran off 10 straight points for a 70-65 advantage.

Greece cut the deficit down to three, 77-74, on a Karathanasis lay up with 42 seconds left to play, but it was too little too late as Turkey held on until the final whistle.

George Georgakis, who helped Greece take the ascendence in the first half, had a team-high 22 points while Karathanasis chipped in with 14.
