Italy End Turkey's Run

Italy put on one of their best displays so far to hand Turkey their first loss, 70-61, at the U18 European Championship Men in Hagondange, France.

The result saw Italy improve to 2-2 in Group F while Turkey dropped to 3-1.

The Azzurri got off to a perfect start, taking a 19-7 lead with 2:39 left in the first quarter thanks to the early scoring prowesses of Riccardo Moraschini and Achille Polanara.

Turkey, who again looked to rest some of their key players, cut into the deficit in the second quarter, coming within one, 20-19, on Burak Yuksel's lay up but Italy then reeled off 12 unanswered points for a 32-20 score with 6:54 to go before the half.

Alessandro Ramagli's men took a 46-39 advantage into the locker room and Turkey threatened after the re-start, closing within three, 46-43 on Can Mutaf's jumper with 6:34 left in the third quarter.

But that is as close as they would get as Italy took a 56-51 lead into the final period and they held on with Andrea De Nicolao and Michele Vitali answering Turkey's big baskets with some of their own.

De Nicolao had a game-high 20 points while Moraschini and Vitali chipped in with 11 each.

Furkan Aldemir scored 13 points for Turkey.
