What seemed unconceivable a few days ago has become reality as France advanced to the semi-finals following an 82-72 win over Italy at the UMCOR U18 European Championship Men in Greece.
As the final buzzer sounded, the French team rejoiced at half court, a sight that would have been difficult to fathom just a few days ago after France lost to Iceland.
Trailing for most of the fourth quarter in a tight contest, Greece fought back to defeat Italy 73-70 in the quarter-final round of the UMCOR U18 European Championship Men.
Greece took their first lead of the fourth quarter with 3:24 to go in the game when Marios Sakellarakis hit a mid-range corner jumper and the Greeks would maintain that lead for the rest of the game.
Chavdar Kostov’s game-high 37 points propelled Bulgaria to a 86-71 win over Germany in Group C play of the Ostchem U18 European Championship in Greece.
The 196-cm guard hit on 13-of-26 field goal attempts, including 6-of-10 from three-point range as Bulgaria controlled the game throughout.
Lithuania outscored Latvia 30-13 in the pivotal second quarter to win 85-67 in their opening game of the UMCOR U18 European Championship Men in Argostoli, Greece.
Lithuania had balanced scoring with five players in double figures: Martynas Gecevicius (16), Rokas Uzas (13), Marius Valukonis (12), Panas Skurdauskas (12) and Zygimantas Janavicius (10).
