Spain Cruise To Victory As Belgium Go Cold

16 August 2010
A superb second half helped Spain to victory over Belgium in Group F of the Qualifying Round at the U16 European Championship Women at Ptolemaida and Kozani. Spain won 61-48 after they outscored the Belgians by twenty points in the last two quarters.

In a rematch from last year's title game Spain and Belgium went head to head. While Belgium looked sharp in the first half (they were leading 40-33 at the break), they lost their rhythym after the intermission.

Belgium Head Coach Daniel Goethals had to watch his team giving up 20 points in a row in the third quarter. And if it wasn't for a last second lay-up, the Belgians would have ended the third period scoreless.

Shocked by the turn of events Belgium did not recover in the final period. They only scored six more points while Spain took advantage of their struggling rivals and increased the lead step by step.

Rebounding was a huge factor. Spain corralled 50 boards while Belgium only grabbed 33. With a big advantage underneath the basket reigning champion Spain were set for success.

The final score 61-48 brought them a vital two points in a battle to reach the Quarter-Final Round.

Belgium's Heleen Adams scored 16 points. After she marked 14 in the first half she could only score one more basket in the second. Spain, who showed a balanced team effort, had their leading scorer in Maria Arrojo (12 points).
