With a berth in the semi-finals hanging in the balance, Russia needed a late fight-back to knock off a motivated Belgium and give themselves excellent chances of making the top four of the Termosteps U16 European Championship Women.
Alexandra Tarasova scored 11 of her 19 points in the final four minutes and grabbed 15 rebounds for Russia, who improved to 4-1 in Group F and awaited the result of the France-Spain showdown to see if they made Saturday's semis.
Olesya Malashenko continued her dominant performance at the Termosteps U16 European Championship Women in collecting 38 points and 23 rebounds in Ukraine's 80-71 victory over Belgium in Group F of the Qualifying Round.
Malashenko remains the leading scorer of the tournament (24.4 points) and moved to second in rebounding (14.6) after collecting her third double-double in five games for Ukraine.
France remained undefeated at the Termosteps U16 European Championship Women with a 75-70 victory over Belgium, who nearly came back from a 14-point fourth quarter deficit in Group F.
The French were ahead 64-50 with 5:14 remaining but saw that lead melt to one point with 30 seconds left. France only survived as Diandra Tchatchouang and Helena Yasmina Akmouche both made two free throws in the final 16 seconds.
Three-time defending champions Spain continued to march through the field at the Termosteps U16 European Championship Women with a 68-60 victory over Belgium to remain undefeated.
