GAME REPORT

Gruda Gets Champions Back On Track

Sandrine Gruda (UMMC Ekaterinburg)
Sandrine Gruda was the star in a dominant Ekat frontcourt

A classy display from Sandrine Gruda helped defending champions UMMC Ekaterinburg return to winning ways in EuroLeague Women Group A as they claimed a comfortable 83-55 success against Good Angels Kosice.

A fortnight after suffering their only defeat of their season so far in a loss at Tango Bourges, it was a French star who rose to the occasion against the depleted Kosice.

Gruda completed a fine double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds as UMMC followed up their recent Russian Cup title with an 11th straight home win in EuroLeague Women.

Exploiting a lack of depth and experience in the Good Angels frontcourt, Polish center Ewelina Kobryn and Candace Parker excelled in the paint with efficient shooting efforts which provided nice cameos to the headline-making Gruda.

As for the visitors, it was a tough return back to the court where they reached the semi-finals of the competition last season and perhaps no surprise that without the influential Plenette Pierson, they tasted defeat for the first time on their travels.

Kosice head coach Maros Kovacik didn't have new recruit Lynetta Kizer at his disposal, although despite being short on numbers, his team battled valiantly for the first-half.

Indeed when Miljana Bojovic drained a triple at the start of the third period, UMMC were only 39-34 in front, but as the remainder of the game unfolded, their superior quality and strength in depth allowed them to streak away with ease.

Swedish forward Farhiya Abdi led the way in defeat with 22 points and nine rebounds.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes UMMC Ekaterinburg vs. Good Angels Kosice

UMMC Player Sandrine Gruda

"It wasn't an easy game. We have just returned from the Russian Cup finals and it was hard to refocus and concentrate on EuroLeague Women."

UMMC Head Coach Olaf Lange
"We had a very emotional weekend and a really tough time at the Russian Cup final. I was concerned because it is very hard to refocus and I knew that we will face a good physical team and it will be a tough challenge. We had some trouble on defence in the first period, but improved it in the second half and were able to move on."

Good Angels Kosice Player Farhiya Abdi
"It was a hard game. We did well in the first half and were fighting back. But in the second half we didn't play too good. If we might have been able to keep the pace and fight back, everything might have ended in an absolutely different way."

Good Angels Kosice Head Coach Maros Kovacik
"Congratulations to Ekaterinburg. It is hard to play against a team that has great players. We came to Ekaterinburg experiencing troubles with the roster. We had a short bench and only two center players and one of them is very young. We tried to use it as an advantage. The team played great for the first 30 minutes, but the last 3-4 minutes were not so good, we gave up. It is hard to keep the game tempo competing with UMMC. In spite of it I am proud of my team."
