Wisla Can-Pack Krakow were a late addition to the EuroLeague Women and they look determined to make the most of the opportunity after opening the season with a win at Halcon Avenida in Spain.
The Polish club, granted entry to the competition after CSKA Moscow pulled out due to sponsorship problems, prevailed 65-60 in Salamanca on Wednesday night with Liron Cohen scoring 21 points.
The long-time coach in Salamanca, Jose Hernandez, had said "adios" to Avenida after the 2008-09 campaign to become the new boss of Wisla.
It didn't take long for him to make a triumphant return.
The Krakow team went in front by as many as 11 points in the third quarter but Avenida fought back and cut the deficit to 46-44 on a three-pointer from Olexandra Gorbunova.
Cohen finished the frame with a pair of free-throws and a three-pointer to give the Polish outfit a 51-44 lead.
Four times Avenida reduced the arrears to just three points in the final quarter, the last when Silvia Dominguez made a jump shot with 25 seconds left.
The Spain international fouled Cohen, however, and the Israel national team guard sank both attempts from the stripe.
Dominguez then missed a three-pointer and Krakow rebounded to seal the victory.
Katerina Zohnová scored 15 points for Wisla and Marta Fernandez, the former Spain international, contributed 11.
