After 5 days in the OMNITEL U18 European Championship there's still only one unbeaten team and that's the host of Lithuania who beat Spain 77-58 in Group E at the Lietuvos Rytas Arena in Vilnius, Lithuania on a Tuesday evening.
The win takes Lithuania to a 4-0 record in the group, enough to secure a ticket to the quarter-finals and in case Poland beat Latvia in the closing game of the day the locals will win the group already today. Spain dropped to 1-3 but can still qualify.
|Edgaras Ulanovas signed off with 9 points and 2 rebounds against a sticky defense of Spain|
Jonas Valanciunas had another good performance with 20 points in 25 minutes, Deividas Pukis added 19.
Spain saw 9 points from Pere Oriola and Jaime Fernandez and suffered from a bad shooting day.
By the final buzzer the Spanish side collected only 2 three pointers in 11.1%, while Lithuania reached 9 in 20 attempts.
After beating France by 41 points yesterday, this time Lithuania faced a bit more trouble, and took off only in the 2nd half.
Pukis hit a three pointer deep in the 1st qurter to bestow his team the first meaningful lead, 19-11, and Spain seemed in an uncomfortable zone.
Edgaras Ulanovas scored from the arc and together with points by Valanciunas created a 15 point difference, but Oriola and Fernandez stepped up and before the half time buzzer cut the margin to just 6 at 38-32.
Spain cut the gap by half early in the 2nd half, but Valanciunas picked up his game, sent his team on a 7-0 run and another dunk by the big guy made it 51-38 with 15 minutes on the game clock.
Valanciunas continued to celebrate and collected 11 points in a bit over 6 minutes, to stretch the difference to 16 and from this point Spain never found the way back to the game.
Lithuania will take on Latvia tomorrow for a Baltic derby, while Spain will try to sneak into the quarters when they meet Slovenia.
