GAME REPORT

08.09.2001
Turkey - Germany

Turkey was the better of the two sides to start the match. Germany had difficulty finding a scorer other than Okulaja, who scored the team's first 8 points. They also committed 5 turnovers, 3 by Mithat Demirel. However, the introduction of Marko Pesic and the timeout by German coach Henrik Dettmann 02:33 to go changed the game drastically. Germany had a 9-0 run to end the quarter, wihch included two basket-fouls, both committed by Turkcan who had picked up 3 personal fouls in the quarter. The final score of the period was 20 - 19 for Germany.

The Turkish coach Aydin Ors started the second quarter with zone defense and by substituting Harun Erdenay. The success at the defensive end was converted by easy transition buckets for a quick 12-2 run and for a 9-point lead: 22 - 31. Germany came right back with Dirk Nowitzki starting to contribute with 11 points. The Germans had 3 players in double figures to finish the half with a tie-score: 41 - 41. Okulaja led with 8 rebounds. Ibrahim Kutluay almost reached his scoring average of 22.5 points at that point with 19. 42 of the 82 combined total points scored by both teams came in the paint, mostly of 6 offensive boards from Germany and a couple of back door plays from Turkey. Turkey were worried with Mirsad Turkcan and Hidayet Turkoglu finishing the half on the bench, both with 3 fouls.

Germany had a bright start to the second half with two treys which they only shot 2 / 10 (20%) in the first half. However, Turkey could come back thanks to 5 Germany turnovers, 3 of them being offensive fouls. Turkey had the slightest advantage when the quarter ended: 56 - 57.

Mirsad Tukcan, the hero of the quarter final against Croatia, fouled out with 07:55 to go in regulation. This gave Germany stayed in the match with their hustle crushing the offensive boards. In the first 8 minutes of the last quarter, Germany managed to score only 3 field goals, all off offensive rebounds. They grabbed 19 offensive boards in regulation, out of which 7 belonged to Ademola Okulaja. Failing to convert from the line (15 / 25 - % 60 in the regulation), they could only get the lead with 30 seconds to go with a Patrick Femerling lay-up: 68 - 67. Meanwhile, Turkey also struggled from the field, failing to score for 2:27. Hidayet Turkoglu broke the dead lock with only seconds to go with a crucial rain maker to send the game into overtime: 70 - 70.

Turkey was in deep foul trouble 2 minutes to go in the extra period. They had 4 players with 5 fouls. However, the youngster Kaya Peker took full charge when his tough defense against Dirk Nowitzki resulted in an offensive foul, being the 5th for the NBA star. Then, it was the chance for another NBA player: Hidayet Turkoglu. He took responsibility of the last possession when Turkey was down a point and converted a lay-up which brought the place in the final for Turkey: 78 - 79. Hidayet Turkoglu scored 23 points, grabbed 11 boards and dished out 8 assists.
