Hosts Back On Winning Track
Klaudia Lukacovicova bounced back from a sub-par performance against Lithuania on Wednesday to lead the Slovak Republic to a 65-57 win over Poland in the U18 European Championship for Women.
Lukacovicova, who had just six points and five rebounds and was limited by foul trouble in a heartbreaking loss to the Lithuanians on Wednesday, scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
The win saw both teams finish with 2-3 marks in Group E of the Qualifying Round. The host nation finished third in the group as they beat the Poles, who in turn took fourth place.
The Slovak Republic jumped to an early 11-5 lead behind Lukacovicova's strong start and kept going as Veronika Cernakova got going late in the first period.
They kept on rolling early in the second period, extending their advantage to 10, 29-19, on back-to-back baskets by Martina Kissova.
Poland fought their way back into the game and trailed by just two, 37-35, at the half thanks to the strong play Klaudia Sosnowska and Olivia Tomialowicz who combined for 19 points alone.
Michal Porubcan's girls took the lead several times in the third quarter but the Slovak Republic came back thanks to a scoring outburst by Cernakova to be on top, 50-46, heading into the final quarter.
Olivia Tomialowicz and Roza Ratajczak got Poland within two, 55-53, with just over seven minutes left to play but the hosts were able to pull it off behind the play of Lukacovicova and Cernakova.
Tomialowicz had 17 points and Klaudia Sosnowska added a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.
