Javier Imbroda (Coach, Spain):
We knew that it was going to be a very competitive game. We played them in a friendly game three weeks ago and they had beaten us with a big margin then. Since then, we have been working on our offensive sets against their zone. We have played through our sets well, found our shots but failed to hit them. Therefore, at the end, it came down to us playing defense and this is how we have won tonight: with defense. We have a very young team but my players have shown great character in the crucial moments as seen in our effort tonight. Our next match will be against Yugoslavia and I think they are a step ahead of the rest in European basketball in terms of talent, teamwork and physical conditioning. We are looking forward to that match.
Nacho Rodriguez (Player, Spain):
We have been working for this tournament very intensely for the last 6-7 weeks. Our young nucleus have played like experinenced players, hitting clutch shots and getting the crucial stops. I am very proud of being a part of this team.
Stanislav Eremin (Coach, Russia):
The key of the match was the great defense that Spain played when it came down to the wire. They kept their cool and Navarro hit a very important lay-up which won the match for Spain. 3 days of rest did not benefit us at all. I opted Kirilenko and Panov to play the last minutes because I thought they would present a more dangerous weapon. Overall, Spain was the better side tonight.
Nikita Morgunov (Player, Russia):
It was a very difficult game. I would like to congratulate Spain for the win. We only shot 36 % from the field and that was where we lost the match. As told before, Spanish defense in the 4th quarter won the match for them.
