|Vasileios Charalampopoulos chipped in with 13 points and 7 rebounds for Greece|
Greece came through in the clutch in an extraordinary fourth quarter to take a 63-52 win over Belgium in their opening Group A game in the U16 European Championship Men.
Greece began the final stanza leading 49-36 after three periods of steady dominance, but suddenly found themselves under sustained attack as Belgium put together a 14-2 run to close to within one point, 51-50, on Sigfredo Casero's jump-shot with 5:23 to go.
Dionysis Skoulidas replied for the Greeks before Roby Rogiers' lay-up brought the gap back to one with 4:02 left on the clock.
The stage appeared set for a dramatic finale, but instead, Rogiers' shot proved to be Belgium's final basket of the game.
Just as quickly as they had come to life on the offensive end they disappeared without trace as Greece finished on a 10-0 run to put victory in the books, Georgios Papagiannis crowning it with a dunk a minute from time.
That took Papagiannis to a team-high 16 points to go with his 11 rebounds, with Vasileios Charalampopoulos the only other Greek player to get into double figures with 13 points.
Akyazili finished with 21 points to lead Belgium, while Casero collected 12.
