Montenegro Ends Qualifying Round On Upswing

Montenegro finished Group E of the Omnitel European Championship Men with a 75-72 win over Poland to have some happy ending to their Qualifying Round tour.

The game had no influence on the future of the competition as Poland already secured the 2nd spot in the group, and Montenegro's destination was set to the 9-12 classification games.

Poland finished the group with a 3-2 record while Montenegro with a 2-3 balance.

The Polish coach, Jerzy Szambelan, chose to rest his main players and allowed his back ups to catch more playing time than the usual.

Marko Mugosa led the winners with 26 points and Nikola Ivanovic had 19 with four assists.

Michal Michalak had 17 points in 23 minutes for Poland.

Filip Knezeviic dominated the paint for Montenegro as his team took an 18-12 lead late in the first quarter.

Mihailo Kasalica pushed his team to an 11 point lead, with ten points in the first half, but Michalak scored from distance, and the Polish run extended to the early minutes of the third quarter all the way to 37-31 after 12 points in a row.

Ivanovic was in good momentum and Mugosa joined him to lead Montenegro to a 56-49 lead with 11:30 minutes to play in the game.

Poland showed true character and kept fighting back, but never managed to climb back to the top.

Ivanovic added points from the line and just a three pointer before the buzzer allowed Poland to finish a single bucket behind.
