Wisla Appoint Hernandez, Add Cohen To Mix

15 May 2009

Wisla Can-Pack Krakow have appointed former Halcon Avenida boss Jose Hernandez as their new coach and brought in Israel international Liron Cohen.

Hernandez takes over from Wojciech Downar-Zapolski.

His arrival means there will be even more Spanish flavor to the Krakow club with former national team star Marta Fernandez also agreeing to sign a new deal and play a third straight season for the club.

The 27-year-old Fernandez averaged almost 11 points per game in the EuroLeague Women this year for Wisla.

She is the sister of Spain international and Portland Trail Blazers star Rudy Fernandez.

Hernandez led Avenida to runners-up finishes in the EuroLeague Women and Liga Femenina this year.

He revealed earlier this week that he'd received an opportunity that was too good to turn down when announcing his departure from Avenida.

"I have received a very important offer from a foreign club, a club that wants to be big in Europe and that is counting on me to lead their project," he said.

"This opportunity could be unique and therefore, it's difficult to say no to it ..."

Cohen, meanwhile, a 26-year-old guard, joins from Maxima Broker Kosice.

She averaged better than 12 points and five assists in 12 EuroLeague Women games this season.

Cohen is currently warming up for next month's EuroBasket Women with Israel's national team.

Wisla have also appointed Spaniard Jordi Aragones to serve as an assistant coach for Hernandez.
