Germany have officially called time on coach Henrik Dettman following the country's early exit from the European Championships in Sweden. Dettman, who is also a coach in the Bundesliga, was under pressure to challenge for the title with the presence of Dallas Mavericks superstar Dirk Nowitzki in his line-up.
Following the meeting of the FIBA Europe Board in November 2002, it was decided that a new system of qualification would be implemented for the 2005 European Championship for Men.
Germany will have to wait and see if star player Dirk Nowitzki will be able to play for them again after their 86-84 defeat to Italy.
The setback knocked the Germans, among a group of favourites to win the European title, out of the championships.
Once a side joins the elite as the Germans did by virtue of their bronze-medal winning team last summer at the World Championships, the hunters become the hunted.
"We´re devastated and disappointed,” said Germany’s Dirk Nowitzki, the Dallas Mavericks superstar.
