Ukraine and Belarus retained Division A status after surviving the Classification Round of the U20 European Championship Women 2009 at the expense of the Czech Republic and Montenegro who will spend next year in Division B.
On Friday, Belarus downed the Czech Republic 74-46 in a battle between two 1-1 teams and with classification for Division A on the line.
Italy rode the scoring outburst of their captain, Martina Crippa, to an easy (79-56) victory over Bulgaria to enter the Qualifying Round with an 1-1 record.
Crippa notched 11 of her 29 total points in what turned out to be a decisive first quarter.
Serbia took care of a tough Italian team, 68-48, to go to 2-0 in Group B. Serbia never trailed in the contest that they won, above all, on the defensive end and on the glass. They held Italy to under 30% shooting from the field and out-rebounded them 55-31.
Serbia and Italy both started out Group B play with blow-outs of Bulgaria and Montenegro.
Serbia crushed Bulgaria 91-48 in the opening game of Group B and sent out a message to any would-be doubters that they are a serious contender to take home the gold from Gdynia.
