High Five Finish For Belarus

Aliaksandra Tarasava (Belarus)
Aliaksandra Tarasava signed off her EuroBasket Women involvement with 14 points in Belarus' win

By Paul Nilsen

Turning Point: It was a one-shot game early in the second quarter when Belarus were 20-17 ahead, but they then exploded to break the game open with a 15-2 run leading up to half-time and never had cause to look back as they coasted to victory.

Stats Don't Lie: Czech Republic were 7 of 13 from the free-throw line, whilst Belarus made 16 of 17 from the same spot.

Game Hero: Aliaksandra Tarasava was the stand-out player for Belarus with 14 points from a terrific five of seven floor shooting

Belarus strolled to fifth spot at EuroBasket Women 2013 in Orchies with a 64-50 win against Czech Republic, who had to settle for a sixth place finish.

Both teams were able to enjoy their last hurrah at the tournament having accomplished their main missions of securing a place at the FIBA World Championship for Women having lost their quarter-final games.

Belarus continued where they left off 24 hours earlier when they crushed Sweden. Once again they focused on their strong inside presence, but also balanced it with some accurate three-point shooting.

With neither team having seized the initiative, three-pointers by Aliaksandra Tarasava and Tatsiana Likhtarovich provided the springboard required to set Belarus on the road to victory.

Holding a 14 point lead at the start of the second half, they increased the margin further when a free-throw by Yelena Leuchanka made it 39-29.

Czech Republic tried to launch a salvage mission, but Belarus always had too much in their locker during the final quarter as they finished on a high.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Czech Republic vs. Belarus

Czech Republic Tereza Peckova:
"I think in the beginning Belarus made the difference, they put more energy into the game and they were rebounding very good, and I think these two aspects decided the game."

Belarus Zhanna Haradzetskaya:
"We were mentally prepared for this game and I think we played it well. We won the rebounds and we can be satisfied with our shooting percentage. I am satisfied with winning against such a tough opponent."

Czech Republic Head Coach Lubor Blazek:
"Congratulations to my colleague on the victory. We had to come out with energy and concentration and we had none of this. Being satisfied with what you have done before a game is your worst enemy, especially if you play against a team like Belarus."

Belarus Head Coach Rimantas Grigas:
"I am very happy for the win, it is a real pleasure to go back home with two victories at the end of the tournament. Although this game did not mean anything, we wanted to finish in fifth place. I also want to congratulate the Czech Republic because we will both be at the World Championship next year."
