GAME REPORTFenerbahce blew a 24-point third-quarter lead but held on for a 75-67 victory over Lotos Gdynia on Tuesday in EuroLeague Women Group D. American sharpshooter Nicole Powell was three of five from three-point range and finished with a game-high 19 points for Fenerbahce, who hosted the contest. The way the game started, it seemed Fener would cruise to an easy win. With her team on top 17-13, Powell made one of two attempts at the free-throw to start a 13-0 spurt for the Turkish side. Esmeral Tuncluer finished the first quarter by scoring five straight points for a 23-13 lead. When play resumed in the second frame, Powell uncorked one of her three-pointers to take the lead to 26-13. With the home side's lead having ballooned to 30-13, Lotos Gdynia's Australia international Erin Phillips stopped the rot with a three-pointer. But Fenerbahce kept the pressure on. A Powell jump shot inside the final minute of the second quarter gave them their biggest lead of the half at 44-26. A rout was on the cards with Fener going in front by 24 points in the third quarter, but they lost their concentration and endured a scoring drought that lasted almost six minutes. They almost allowed the visitors to claim an incredible win. During the Fenerbahce cold spell, Lotos Gdynia scored 13 unanswered points that left them trailing 63-53 with 4:30 remaining in the contest. The never-say-die Poles twice pulled to within five and then cut it to 71-67 on a Phillips three-pointer with 31 seconds to play. Powell and Penny Taylor each made two free-throws over the last 19 seconds to preserve the win for Fenerbahce. Ivana Matovic had 16 points and Emilija Podrug 14 for Lotos, with Phillips contributing 11. |
