GAME REPORT

CSKA Hammer Halcon Avenida To Force Decider

CSKA Moscow hit back with a vengeance on Friday to level their EuroLeague Women play-off showdown with Halcon Avenida.

Igor Grudin's team opened up a 15-point lead by half-time and pulled away when play resumed for a 95-64 triumph.

The deciding game three of the Eighth-Finals clash will be played on Wednesday.

Avenida, without the loud support of their home fans back in Salamanca, caved in against a CSKA side that had five players reach double figures.

Ann Wauters finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds. The Belgian center had scored 11 by half-time.

French point guard Edwige Lawson-Wade poured in 15 points and Janel McCarville 13 with eight of hers coming before the break.

Avenida did have their moments early on with a Gunta Basko three-ball putting them on top at 11-7 with 5:44 to go in the opening quarter.

Wauters answered with a three-point play and then added a jump shot to put the hosts in front for good.

Ilona Korstin followed with a jumper before Elena Danilochkina scored five straight points, including a three-ball, for a 19-11 lead.

Becky Hammon finished the run with a lay-up and two free throws to make it 23-11 and CSKA stayed in front the rest of the way.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes CSKA Moscow vs. Halcon Avenida

Igor Grudin, CSKA Head Coach:

"In the first quater the game was equal. But in the second quater we looked stronger. I wish we had the advantage of our court in the final game. The flight, the time difference can influence the quality of the game greatly. We will prepare for the third game and practice taking into account all the factors."

Ann Waters, CSKA player

"After the loss in Spain we were very disapointed. So we had to focus and play much better. I think we really played very good tonight. The third game is going to be very difficult. I think if we try to play better on defence like we played today, we have a chance to win there."

Jose Ignacio, Halcón Avenida Head Coach:

"CSKA was the best team today. In the first quater they had better options. Moreover we had problems with the rebounds.  We couldn't play inside. When we were 16 points down we started to think about the next game in Spain."

Gunta Basko, Halcon Avenida Player:

"We regret that we've lost. We made a lot of mistakes. But it is good that we have one more game. I hope that we'll play better at home."
