Russia Disappoint, Slovenia Win In Vain

There was a sense of disappointment for both teams as Russia and Slovenia left the court at the U20 European Championship Men 2010 in Makarska.

While Slovenia chalked up what was only their second triumph in the entire tournament with an 82-68 win, they still finish bottom of the group while Russia were condemned to a tough quarter-final against defending champions Greece.

The defeat and resulting match-up with the Greeks left Russian head coach, Boris Livanov disappointed and perhaps anticipating the inevitable when the competition moves to Zadar.

"The game didn't work well for us as our players were afraid. This is not good for us but that's the fact.

"At the end I suppose we have to be satisfied to be in with the eight teams in the quarter-finals. In Zadar we will just have to play as well as we can."

While Russia had been so impressive in their victory against Spain, Slovenia took advantage of their nerves and it was Marko Vranjkovic who led his team to success with 25 points off the back of some excellent shooting which saw him sink four triples.

Slovenia led 41-36 at the half and might have been expecting a second half comeback by Russia but it failed to materialise as the Russian offence stuttered for the whole game.

Only Vladimir Ivlev made it into double-digits with ten points to add to his 14 rebounds for his somewhat now customary double-double.
