European rookies Strauss Iscar opened their FIBA Europe League account with a 85-76 victory tonight over French club SLUC Nancy.
Although Strauss Iscar have only one year's experience in Israel's first division and none at all in Europe, they showed tonight that their credentials are serious.
SLUC seemed to have control of the game in the first quarter, but 13 first half points from forward Sharon Shason kept the Israelis in the game.
The key moment in the game was a 10-2 run from Strauss Iscar in the 3rd quarter and they took a 55-47 lead with 4 minutes to go in the period.
SLUC reduced the lead to 2 points (67:65) in the 4th quarter, but a three-pointer from Eric Campbell gave Strauss the breathing space they needed to maintain their lead until the buzzer.
Home team guard Stevin Smith was voted MVP of the game for his 18 point effort. He was aided considerably by team-mates Sharon Shason (16 points), Eric Campbell (17 points) and Barak Peleg (19 points).
Velibor Radovic and Joseph Garcia both scored 17 points for SLUC Nancy.
