Claudio Fonseca was once heralded as the brightest young hope of Portugese basketball but so far at least, has failed to live up to the hype. He was picked up by Spanish giants Valencia as a young player but never made a big enough impression to secure regular court time at ACB level. Still only 22-years-old, he still has plenty of time to prove the doubters wrong and to show he can step up to the senior National Team and make a contribution. Certainly the level of skill and athleticism Fonseca possesses is hugely impressive. He runs the floor well, can dunk, score down low and while question marks remain over his ball handling and lack of aggression, he is a big talent with promise and it could be time to start realising it. It seems like returning to Portugal was a good move and if he can stay healthy and overcome the lack of confidence which sometimes affects him on court he could be a real asset.
