GAME REPORT

Wisla Avoid Home Upset

Wisla Can-Pack Krakow got a scare but won at home against Basket Lattes Montpellier Agglomeration on Wednesday night, in the EuroLeague Women.

The French outfit, fresh off an upset of Bourges in the domestic league, led until midway through the fourth quarter but ended up falling, 66-58.

Nicole Powell had 17 points and eight rebounds for Wisla, who improved to 3-0 and now sit alone at the top of Group C after winning Wednesday night's battle of unbeatens.

Due in large part to the play of Stephany Skrba, who had 14 points and 11 rebounds, the visitors had the lead 35 minutes into the game.

Skrba's last basket, a jump shot after catching a pass from Ana Lelas, put BLMA on top 54-53.

Milka Bjelica came to the rescue for the Polish club, hitting a jump shot to put her side back in front.

After an Edwige Lawson turnover, Bjelica went down and struck again for a 57-54 advantage.

Ana Dabovic and Erin Phillips followed with baskets to push the advantage to 61-54, and Wisla held on for the win.

Petra Ujhelyi is proving to be quite a signing by Wisla because the Hungarian center had a game-high 13 rebounds to go with her nine points.

Wisla had a balanced scoring attack with De Mondt the player other than Powell to hit double digits in points.

She hit a pair of three-balls and finished with 10 points.

Turnovers were crucial in the game, with BLMA committing 22 and the Polish club just 12.

Powell had a game-high five steals.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Wisla Can-Pack vs. BLMA

Valery Demory (coach BLMA):
“Congratulations to the Krakow team; they are very strong and we had the chance to contest a very good. They had two excellent shooters: Nicole Powell and Anke De Mondt  but every players of the home team worked hard for the victory. For my team it was a very important new experience. We are still fighting [to qualify] to the next round.”

Jose Hernandez (coach Wisla Can-Pack):
“I am very happy. After a very hard game in Moscow where we had to play without Ewelina Kobryn -this week we had two moreplayers- Ujhelyi and Phillips - with health problems. They have not practiced much so that game was particularly difficult for my team. BLMA is a very good team also but thanks to our very good defence we were able to win.”

Edwige Lawson (BLMA):
“Wisla Can-Pack is an excellent team and it was very important for us to play them in this game. We are ‘new’ in EuroLeague Women. Congratulations to Krakow.”

Nicole Powell (Wisla Can-Pack):
“We are very happy. We still miss Ewelina Kobryn and we wait for her to come back. We are looking forward to win more of the next games.”
