GAME REPORT

Medias Hang On For Close Win

5. Deven Mitchell (Gaz Metan Medias)

Gaz Metan Medias have squeezed out a hard-fought 70-68 win over Tartu Rock in Group D EuroChallenge action in Estonia on Tuesday night.

The game went down right to the wire as Tartu's Egidijus Dimsa deliberately missed a free throw in the hope of an offensive rebound with one second left, but Deven Mitchell grabbed the loose ball to preserve the win.

Medias had watched an eight-point lead disappear as Tartu tied it up at 65-65 with 86 seconds left, setting up a tense finish.

Slobodan Dundjerski put Medias back in front with a three-pointer 30 seconds out from full time, and Justin Ingram missed a three for Tartu, instead hitting a pair of free throws following Rares Mandache's turnover.

Ivan Ivanovic held his nerve at the line to make it 70-67 to Medias with eight ticks left and Tartu then blew a couple of chances to force overtime at the end.

Ingram missed another three, and then Valmo Kriisa missed a pair of free throws, the second deliberately to get the rebound.

Get it they did, but Dimsa could not take full advantage thanks to Mitchell's rebound.

Michael St. John led Medias with 17 points while Mitchell had 16.

Dimsa led Tartu with 15 points while Ingram added 14 and Kristo Saage 11.

It is Tartu's second defeat in as many EuroChallenge games while Medias move to 2-0.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Tartu Rock vs. Gaz Metan Medias

Gaz Metan Medias player Michael St John
"The game was very up and down and with a lot of emotions. It started pretty even, we were down by half-time so we had to fight our way back to the game. We got a little bit of comfort with the eight point lead, but then we let them back in. Emotions were high and low, but we stuck together to make the plays down the stretch when we needed."

Gaz Metan Medias head coach Marcel Den Tenter
"It was a very tough game today. As both teams scored few points the value of every point was huge. They totally dominated us in offensive rebounding - they had 21 offensive rebounds which is almost to the limit of unbelievable. We knew that this team was very good at offensive rebounds, but we could not do too much about it. I think we compensated with controlling the main players of Tartu. We did not allow them too many easy and open shots. With this we dropped their percentage and we could control the result during the game. I'm very happy that my players understood the effort that is needed for this level."

Tartu University/Rock head coach Gert Kullamäe
"
We were picked apart in the end of third quarter and in the beginning of the fourth with pick-and-roll offence and our defensive game did not hold up. And in some moments our offence did not work as well and became too one-sided. When you look at the numbers it is difficult to understand how we could lose a game where we dominated the boards 42:24, but then again we made 22 turnovers."
