GAME REPORT

Kataja, Flowers Eliminate Ploiesti

5. Jermaine Flowers (Joensuun Kataja)
Jermaine Flowers was red-hot with 28 points and 10 rebounds for Joensuun Kataja

Joensuun Kataja kept their EuroChallenge last 16 hopes on track but ended those of CSU Asesoft Ploiesti with an 80-67 road win.

Jermaine Flowers poured in 28 points and collected 10 rebounds while Petri Virtanen had 17 points in the victory.

Kataja (2-2) took control of the game in the second and third quarters, with the decisive break a 9-0 run that made it 52-39 on Petri Virtanen's free throws midway through the third.

They had led 38-31 at half-time, but let Asesoft come back at them early in the second half, with Catalin Burlacu's three-pointer making it 40-37.

Antti Kanervo responded in kind before Darius Hargrove made a driving lay-up for the hosts to leave the gap at four.

But when Julian Terrell hit two free throws and Juho Nenonen followed up with a three it was the start of a break from which Asesoft would not recover.

Hargrove left Asesoft (0-4) with 17 points while Robert Nyakundi had 16 and Burlacu 10.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes CSU Asesoft Ploiesti vs. Joensuun Kataja

Joensuun Kataja head coach Jukka Toijala
"We knew that we have no chance if we start to play positional, in front of a team that has much more experience than us in european competitions. We had some problems at the end of the second quarter, but after that we took into control and we managed to win. I'm very happy because next week we'll have the chance to qualify into the next round if we beat Keravnos more than 5 points. I must say I never expected to win both games in this group against CSU Asesoft.

Joensuun Kataja player Jonte Flowers
"It was a crazy game, because I felt a little bit nervous at the beginning, but after I made those shots in the first two minutes, all was fine. A road victory is more than a home victory in the EuroChallenge and we all knew that. We acted like a team even when we took some wrong decision. I think we deserved this victory."

CSU Asesoft head coach Vladimir Arnautovic
"
Joensuun Kataja never surprised us tonight. The main problem was our complet evolution. We weren't such aggressive like we planned all week, we lost many balls and we missed many shots. It's very hard to come back when you have nothing to say on the court. We gave many chances to the oponent the entire game."

CSU Asesoft player Virgil Stănescu
"
It was a bad evening for us, we had nothing to show after the break and we made many mistakes. We prepared very good for this game after we lost in Finland, but all came down in a few minutes. I must congratulate the visitors and wish them good luck in the next matches."
