Turkey beat Estonia 84-58 in the first game in Group E today to secure themselves at least fourth place in the group behind France.
The fatigue of having played six games in seven days seemed to have caught up with the teams as the game moved at a snail’s pace at times.
The surprise run of the tournament hasn’t lost it legs as Latvia won their fifth game of the tournament against Turkey with a 73-68 victory which came down to the dying seconds.
After Turkey started brightly the game turned into a contest in the second quarter and was more or less tied from three minutes before half-time until the very final seconds, with neither side able to pull away until Can Özcan missed a three pointer for Turkey with two seconds left and the score at 71-68 to Latvia
France bounced back from their defeat to Latvia in the preliminary round to storm to an emphatic 82-68 victory over Turkey.
The physical strength of the French was the key feature in the tie, as they dominated the rebound whilst shooting well with Edwin Jackson back to his best with 21 points.
In our latest installment of 24 seconds we caught up with Turkey duo Birkan Batuk and Can Özcan.
Both players have been integral to their team’s success but they had more on their mind then just basketball, like superstitions, Mr. Bean and Spanish girls.
