At the age of 35, Reyes has been named Spanish national team captain for the first time, due to the absence of Juan Carlos Navarro. In the event Spain win gold in Lille however, Reyes will be the first player on the team to lift the trophy for the second time in his career, as Navarro had conceded him the honour at EuroBasket 2011. Reyes sat out EuroBasket 2013 following 12 consecutive campaigns with Spain at senior level. He recently admitted that while he got some much needed rest, he spent that entire summer regretting the decision and could not wait to return for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup. En route to Real Madrid's title conquest, Reyes became this season the second-oldest player, after Arvydas Sabonis, to be selected on the All-Euroleague First Team. The veteran has just extended his contract with Real for another two years.
