Halcon Avenida stormed to a fourth consecutive victory in the EuroLeague Women on Wednesday night by thrashing Galatasaray in Salamanca. Lucas Mondelo's side delivered a first-half knockout, leading by as many as 23 points and ultimately winning the Group C game, 86-59.
Sancho Lyttle had 14 points and 17 rebounds to underline her status as one of the top players in the competition again this season.
Alba Torrens of Spain poured in a game-high 18 points for Avenida, who next week travel to Russia for a clash with Sparta&K M.R. Vidnoje.
An early burst by Avenida put them on their way to a convincing triumph.
Jump shots by Erika De Souza, Lyttle and Anna Montanana and Anke De Mondt's two three-pointers came in a 12-0 run that gave the home side a 14-2 lead four minutes into the contest.
The Turkish never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.
With 1:59 to go in the first half, Avenida had a 40-17 lead and they kept the pressure in the second half.
The hosts finished seven of 19 from long range and outrebounded Galatasaray 40-31.
The Turkish team were helpless against a Spanish side which shot 27 of 45 (60%) inside the arc and seven of 19 (36.8%) beyond it.
De Mondt was particularly effective from long range, making four of six shots on her way to 12 points.
Galatasaray slumped to 2-2.
Lucas Mondelo, Halcon Avenida coach:
"We knew that we had to control Augustus and Fowles scoring. We executed this to near perfection in the first half, with great deffensive intensity. The key for this game was to set our tempo, as we did, playing as a team for 40 minutes. With great transition basketball and smart five on five plays. We knew that taking care of the ball, the game was on our side, and as a result we only commited 11 turnovers."
Alba Torrens, Halcon Avenida coach:
"The team played a great deffense that allowed us to run and get easy scores. We made very few mistakes and played as a team in the offense which got us a great win."
