It was third time lucky for BK Ventspils in Group I of the EuroChallenge Last 16 as their first victory came in dominant fashion, a 96-64 rout of Gaz Metan Medias.

Having lost their opening two games at this stage of the competition, Ventspils ensured there would be no three-peat as they took control early and just kept on going.

They broke the game open with a 15-2 run in the first quarter that saw them go 19-7 up on Martins Meiers' free throws with four minutes left in the opening quarter.

A 10-0 run that continued on into the second period saw them move 34-16 clear on Akselis Vairogs' three-pointer, and another little burst had them 52-33 clear at half-time following Martins Laksa's jump-shot.

There was no let off in the second half, and a 10-0 run capped by Vairogs' lay-up made it 72-45.

Their biggest lead came two minutes from the finish when Ronalds Zakis' free throws made it 94-56.

Meiers and Folarin Campbell had 14 points each to lead Ventspils while Sandis Valters had 13, Laksa 12 and Vairogs 10.

Kyle Shiloh led the visitors with 14 points, with Rares Mandache adding 12.

The result leaves both teams with 1-2 records in the group.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes BK Ventspils vs. Gaz Metan Medias

Gaz Metan Medias player Rares Mandache

"Ventspils played agressive basketball, we knew they have good shooters. We tried to change something in the third quarter, but it didn't work out. I want to congratulate Ventspils, they needed this victory, especially after their two previous losses in this group."

Gaz Metan Medias head coach Marcel Dan Tenter

"Ventspils played good basketball tonight. We had weak defence and we didn't manage to stop their shooters. We tried to be aggressive but Ventspils still found some ways to stop us. Congratulations to Ventspils and my team has to understand that it is impossible to win a game without proper defence."

BK Ventspils player Martins Meiers

"I think this was a good game, however we made many mistakes. We need to work on our concentration. I am happy with what we did in the first half when we scored many three-pointers. This helped us to stay ahead in the result."

BK Ventspils head coach Roberts Stelmahers

"My team performed well. I think we did everything good defensively, and with a good defence, good offensive comes naturally. This victory was important, but now we have to prepare for the next game."
