Hapoel Holon Cruise At Home

Sean Mcdonough Daniel (Israel)
Sean Daniel had nine points as Hapoel Halon cruised to victory in their opening EuroChallenge encounter on Wednesday evening

Hapoel Holon has opened their 2012/2013 EuroChallenge account with a straightforward 84-69 victory over Armia in Group H action on Wednesday night.

Leading from start to finish, the Israeli hosts never looked like losing as Franklin Hassell contributed a game-high 22-point, 15-rebound double-double, whilst David Smith chipped in 16 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Zachary Rosen had 13 points and Jerome Dyson helped out with 12.

Having led 14-6 with less than five minutes played, Hapoel Holon's lead briefly looked threatened when a Curtis Millage three brought the visitors back within three points, 14-11.

But the three-point deficit early on was as close as Armia would come to taking the lead.

Millage ended the game with 20 points whilst Lamayn Wilson chipped in with 15 for the away team.

At the end of the opening quarter, the home side's lead stood at nine points and by the time the half arrived, the buffer had moved into double figures.

The final nail was placed firmly in the coffin following the break as Hassell picked up eight third quarter points to put his team in front, 72-52, with one period remaining.

In the final ten minutes, Armia were able to ensure that the deficit did not grow any further as Hapoel Holon dropped their tempo, seeing their lead cut back to 15 points by the time the final buzzer sounded out.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Hapoel Holon vs. Armia

Hapoel Holon coach, Dan Shamir:

"We had the game under control. I am pleased that my team played good defense. Our strength is consistency because that's how we win games. I do not want to hand out grades to anyone. A long journey always starts with small steps."

Frank Hassell, Hapoel Holon:

"It was a good game; we played as a team like Holon want to play. I play hard; Dan Shamir told me a few things and put me in the right places to succeed.  With a good player and a good coach you have a good game."

Lasha Parghalava, Armia:

"I want to congratulate Holon, they had a great game and they are a good team. It is an important experience for us and I'm sure we will improve in Tbilsi and we will win."

Armia coach, Kote Tugushi:

"A first game is always hard for the team; their fams did a great job.  We knew Holon is a good team and they played their game - running all the time."
