GAME REPORT

Fast Start Gives Greece Win

Evgenia Kollatou (Greece)
Evgenia Kollatou had an all-round performance for Greece

A dominant first quarter enabled Greece to hold off Portugal and secure a 58-48 triumph in their U16 European Championship Women opener in Debrecen.

Turning Point: Scoring the first nine points and racking up a 22-point lead by the end of the opening period was enough for Greece, despite a much improved performance from the Portuguese team for the rest of the match as Greece cooled off.

Game Hero: Although her game-high 19 points required 22 shots, Evgenia Kollatou inspired her team with an impressive all-round performance, adding seven rebounds, five assists and three steals in the victory.

Stats Don't Lie: Portugal had twice as many turnovers as Greece and their profligacy was ultimately their undoing.

The Bottom Line: Greece will be keen to iron out their second-half issues when they take on Turkey tomorrow, while Portugal face a daunting task against the impressive Russian team.
