Reigning champions Spain began the defence of their U18 European Championship Women title in ominous fashion after finding form at both ends of the floor to record a one-sided 102-35 victory against Croatia in Group C.
Turning Point: Quite simply, there wasn't one. Spain raced into a commanding 21-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and never had cause to look in the rear view mirror as they cruised past the 100-point landmark.
Game Hero: Laia Flores had an excellent game-high 20 points for Spain and a sparkling eight steals, while Angela Salvadores added 19 points.
Stats Don't Lie: Spain were dominant in every facet of the game, forcing Croatia into 31 turnovers which harvested 39 points. The losing side also weren't helped by failing to find their range from downtown where they shot a miserable 1-of-16.
The Bottom Line: It was a tough initiation to the tournament for Croatia who will no doubt keep the result in context and try to learn from it. As for Spain, they sent out a message of showing no mercy. They are here to play and to get another gold, which means easing off the accelerator isn't an option.
