|Aline Verelst was the lynchpin for Belgium's opening day win|
A strong defensive effort and some sharp-shooting from downtown underpinned a 61-43 victory for Belgium as they strolled past Greece in their first outing at the U18 European Championship Women in Matosinhos.
Turning Point: Greece were still in the mix early in the fourth quarter when they trailed 40-36, but a 15-2 run by Belgium ended any hopes they had of overhauling their Group B rivals.
Game Hero: Aline Verelst top-scored with 15 points off the back of a terrific four-of-five shooting performance from the perimeter and she also weighed in with five rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Stats Don't Lie: Greece were out-muscled on the glass and out-rebounded 43-29 which made a big difference, as did Belgium sinking a stellar 11-of-22 from three-point range.
The Bottom Line: This was a convincing victory for Belgium ahead of what could now potentially prove to be a group decider on Day 2 against Serbia. Meanwhile Greece will look to pick themselves up against Lithuania and do a better job on the boards.
